Parks: Crews are starting to knock down all the meadows around the city in preparation for Winter. On top of mowing and litter removal there is a big push to fertilize and overseed open spaces in an effort to establish turf density and health leading up to winter.

Playgrounds: The playgrounds crew is always in equipment repair mode with our 29 playgrounds. This time of year they are focusing on shutting irrigation systems down, performing annual maintenance on winter recreation equipment and closing down Deering Oaks Pond for the winter. The Duck house has been removed for the season

Ballfields: Ballfields are full steam ahead doing fall game preparations. As the season winds down there will be a huge push to aerate, overseed and top dress the high use fields to get a jump start on Spring turf growth and health.

Horticulture: The crew is focusing on removing all annuals around city planters and beds. Fall maintenance is in progress  and preparation for bulb planting has begun.

Forestry: Aside from major storm events like hurricanes, microbursts and ice storms, the shoulder season of late Fall from October to November and again in the Spring when the ground thaws in late Spring is perhaps the most challenging time of year in regards to tree damage from storm events.  In the late Fall, with foliage on the trees and active storm patterns that can bring heavy rain, wind gusts in the 45 - 60 mph range weaker trees like our Norway Maples and other trees that might be stressed have a greater potential to fail causing risk.  This past week we saw dozens of trees damaged from a somewhat garden variety storm with winds in the 45 mph range.  We are always on the lookout for that sneak snowstorm around the end of October that can also be a challenge as many urban trees still have foliage on causing branches to fail. Arborists constantly watch the weather hoping to avoid those storms that wreak havoc with our trees!
