The Age-Friendly Portland Steering Committee is looking for volunteers willing to shovel snow for an elderly neighbor this winter. Neighborhood volunteer coordinators are also needed, to help match Portland residents aged 65+ with local volunteer groups and individuals willing to help with snow removal.
How does it work?
Volunteers are asked to shovel the steps and a path from the front door to the sidewalk, as well as the sidewalk in front of the property. They are not asked to shovel the entire driveway or clear snow from roofs. The idea is to create a path which allows the senior citizen, emergency response personnel, Meals on Wheels delivery people, mail carriers, and other visitors to get in and out of the house safely. Once a volunteer receives an assignment, they agree to shovel for that same elderly resident (s) after each snowstorm.
A Google spreadsheet is used to keep track of available volunteers in various neighborhoods and the location of seniors who need help. Designated volunteer coordinators in each neighborhood are asked to match elders with existing volunteers on the list, and to recruit more volunteers in their neighborhood if possible!
Currently there are only eight or nine Portland neighborhoods participating, so we're hoping to expand to more areas of the City this year.
