What kind of smoke detector should I purchase, if necessary?
It does not matter who the manufacturer is, but every smoke detector should be a photoelectric detector, not an ionization detector. This is in conformance with the Portland Fire Department standards. Make sure that any detector is either FM or UL listed. These are the two major appliance testing organizations in the USA. A combination smoke/carbon monoxide detector is acceptable and may even save you a few dollars over purchasing each separately.
